The Importance of Having a Reliable Travel Companion

April 09, 2025

One habit I’ve tried again and again to adopt is regularly carrying and shooting a point-and-shoot camera. Similarly to everyone else I’ve talked to, I have a dreadful, anxious feeling about the quantity of photos I have on my phone that I never look at. The daunting task of scrolling “up” towards the month and year you think the photo might have been taken is a waste of time.

Also the photos I take on my phone are bad.

Cabazon, CA

The point-and-shoot camera in question? A Kyocera Slim T with a Carl Zeiss Tessar 3.5.

Why this camera? Someone on Reddit said it was reliable and had a good lens. Good enough for me. The film I typically use is Kodak UltraMax or Fuji Superia, whatever is cheapest and easiest to get.

Having this little side piece on me at all times allows me to take one or two photos in the moment, then easily pack it away in my pocket or backpack. I don’t think about the photo at all until I scan them.

I’m not saying anything groundbreaking here. But at this point I’m doing whatever I can to stay off my phone, away from the news, and away from most social media.

If using this little 35mm camera can help with that in any way, its a win.
